Prices Commission (Extension of Functions) Bill, 1938

Public bill · Government · Introduced

The Prices Commission (Extension of Functions) Bill, 1938 would allow the Minister for Industry and Commerce to ask the Prices Commission to examine how customs duties and legal restrictions on imported goods were working. The Commission would investigate using powers similar to those already available for price investigations, then report its findings and recommend changes to the Minister. Members with a personal interest in the goods being examined would have to disclose it and generally step aside unless authorised to take part. The measure mattered because it created a formal way to assess whether import taxes and bans or limits on imports were operating properly, although the Commission’s role was to advise rather than make the changes itself.
