Finance (Agreement with United Kingdom) Bill, 1938
Public bill · Government · Introduced
Gives effect to the 25 April 1938 trade agreement with the United Kingdom by changing customs charges on imported goods. It lowers or removes duties on many British and Canadian products, including food, farm and fishery goods, while setting preferential rates for items such as clothing, footwear, paper, soap and candles; it also removes duties on goods including milk, poultry, bacon, eggs, tomatoes and livestock. At the same time, it introduces or changes duties on some other imports, including coal, certain silk fabrics and unsweetened biscuits, and sets a special rate for qualifying British or Canadian motor cars. The changes are intended to make trade with the United Kingdom and Canada easier and cheaper, while protecting Irish producers from competing imports.
