Local Elections Bill, 1948
Public bill · Government · Introduced
The Local Elections Bill, 1948 would reorganise the timing of elections to county, borough, urban-district and town authorities, with elections held by September 1950 and then generally every three years. It would prevent elections during the transition and extend existing members’ terms, while making special arrangements for authorities whose members had already been removed, new town commissioners and the Dublin Board of Assistance. Related elections for vocational education committees, agricultural committees and certain harbour authorities would be brought into the same timetable. It would also protect some councillors from losing office because of changes to the electoral register and allow the Minister for Local Government to adjust election rules to implement the changes.
