Local Elections Bill, 1953
Public bill · Government · Introduced
The Local Elections Bill, 1953 would move elections for county, borough, urban district and town authorities to 1955, then hold them every five years instead of every three, extending current members’ terms until then. As outlined on pages 1 and 3, related bodies—including school attendance committees, vocational education bodies, agricultural bodies, harbour authorities and other committees appointed by local authorities—would follow the new five-year cycle, with existing members generally staying in place until replacements are appointed. It would also protect councillors who temporarily lost their voting status because of a new electoral register, allow the Minister to adjust related rules, arrange certain local authority meetings, and repeal outdated election provisions listed on page 5.
