Mental Treatment Bill, 1953
Public bill · Government · Introduced
The Mental Treatment Bill, 1953 would update the 1945 rules for admitting and detaining people for mental health treatment. It would allow authorised medical staff to carry out duties when senior officers were unavailable, confirm certain earlier detention orders, and make it possible to admit someone urgently in the district where they were found rather than where they normally lived. It would also set rules for taking a person to an institution within seven days of a medical examination, require information about the medical certificate, and allow a second examination to be requested before removal in some cases, providing added safeguards while allowing urgent care.
