Mental Treatment (Detention in Approved Institutions) Bill, 1961
Public bill · Government · Introduced
The measure would retrospectively authorise the detention of certain people in approved mental-health institutions for up to six months, where an extension had been requested but the required formal order had not been made. It would also treat that six-month period as properly authorised when calculating any later extensions. People affected could not claim compensation solely because they had been detained during the earlier period without the formal order, making the measure important because it protected institutions from legal claims while limiting the rights of those detained.
