The B & I Line Bill, 1990 would allow the Minister for Finance to buy additional shares in B & I Line plc. This would put into effect a Government decision to provide the company with up to £6 million in public funding during 1990. The measure would not require any extra staff, and the full £6 million would be spent only if all the additional shares were taken up. Its importance was to give the State a direct way to support B & I Line’s finances.
