Transfer of Sentenced Persons (Amendment) Bill 1997
Public bill · Government · Presented
The measure would let the High Court adjust the type of punishment and, where requested by the Minister, the length of a foreign prison sentence so it fits Irish law for a similar offence. Any adjustment could not increase the sentence or exceed the maximum Irish penalty, while the Minister would generally have to decide transfer applications within six months and keep applicants informed of progress.
