International War Crimes Tribunals Bill 1997
Public bill · Government · Presented
The measure would allow Ireland to cooperate with UN war-crimes tribunals dealing with atrocities in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, including by arresting and surrendering suspects. It would also enable Irish authorities to gather evidence, search premises, protect or recover property, transport prisoners and stop Irish proceedings where an international tribunal has priority. People facing surrender would have court oversight and appeal rights, while intimidating tribunal witnesses would become a criminal offence.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to enable Ireland to fulfil its obligations to co-operate with international tribunals in the performance of their functions relating to the prosecution and punishment of international war crimes and to provide for related matters
