Freedom of Environmental Information Bill 1997

Would give the public a general right to request environmental information from government departments, local authorities and other public bodies, including information about pollution, land, water, wildlife and environmental protection. Requests would normally have to be answered within 14 working days, with limited grounds for refusal and an independent appeals process.

Bill entitled an Act to enable members of the public to access, subject to certain limitations, information relating to the environment; to set out the duty of certain public bodies in this regard; to provide for the establishment of an appeals officer; and to provide for related matters.
