Books banned under older Irish censorship laws would generally lose their prohibition after 12 years, including bans imposed for contraception or abortion-related content. Older bans would expire shortly after the Act took effect, removing an anomaly that left works by authors such as H. G. Wells and Simone de Beauvoir on the prohibited list decades later.
