Human Rights Bill 1998

The Human Rights Bill 1998 would bring major international human-rights agreements into Irish law, require Ireland to ratify further agreements, and ensure laws are interpreted consistently with them where possible. It would also establish an independent Human Rights Commission to investigate complaints, assist victims, advise on legislation and support implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.

Bill entitled an Act to provide for more effective protection of human rights, to make certain international human rights instruments part of domestic law, to establish a commission to be known as An Coimisiún um Chearta an Duine or in the English language the Human Rights Commission, to implement certain provisions of the British-Irish Agreement done at Belfast on the 10th day of April 1998 and to provide for related matters
