Equal Status Bill 1998

The Equal Status Bill 1998 would prohibit discrimination, harassment and victimisation outside employment—in services, shops, housing, land, education, partnerships and clubs—on grounds including gender, family or marital status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race and Traveller identity. It would create complaints and mediation procedures, allow compensation or corrective orders, extend the Equality Authority’s role, and support greater accessibility in public transport and footpaths for people with disabilities.

Bill entitled an Act to promote equality and to prohibit types of discrimination, harassment and related behaviour in connection with the provision of services, property and other opportunities to which the public generally has access, to provide for remedying certain discrimination and other unlawful activities, to provide for the administration by the Equality Authority of various matters pertaining to this Act and the Employment Equality Act, 1998, and to amend certain acts in relation thereto
