No. 11 of 1999

Twentieth Amendment of the Constitution Bill, 1999

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposal would amend the Constitution to allow people aged 18 or over to stand for election to Dáil Éireann, instead of 21, and to run for President, instead of 35. It aims to involve more young people in politics and give voters a wider choice of candidates, while aligning political eligibility with the age of majority and voting age; 18-year-olds would also become eligible for the Seanad because its eligibility rules follow those for the Dáil.
