Youth Work Bill 2000

The Youth Work Bill 2000 would strengthen the role of vocational education committees in planning, coordinating and funding voluntary youth work, with particular attention to disadvantaged young people, gender equality, Irish-language services and young people aged 10 to 21. It would create local voluntary youth councils, a national advisory committee and an independent assessor, while requiring development plans, monitoring, financial controls and public reporting. Government grants could support approved organisations, but funding could be reduced or withdrawn where conditions are not met; the 1997 Youth Work Act would be repealed.

Bill entitled an Act to extend the functions of vocational education committees in relation to youth work, to provide for the making of grants in respect of youth work, to provide for the appointment of an assessor of youth work and his or her functions under the Act, to establish voluntary youth councils, to provide for the development and co-ordination of organisations and persons engaged in youth work and in the provision of youth work programmes and youth work services and for that purpose to establish a National Youth Work Advisory Committee, to repeal the Youth Work Act, 1997, and to provide for related matters
