Health Insurance (Amendment) Bill 2000
Public bill · Government · Presented
Updates to health insurance rules to require broadly equal premiums regardless of age, sex, health condition or how often someone claims, while allowing limited higher charges for people aged 35 or over who join late or let cover lapse. Insurers generally must accept applicants and preserve waiting-period credit when customers switch, while a risk-sharing scheme would redistribute money between insurers to support fair competition. Employer-paid hospital cover is brought under the rules, and the Voluntary Health Insurance Board receives wider powers to provide health and related services.
