Industrial Designs Bill 2000
Public bill · Government · Presented
The Industrial Designs Bill 2000 would create a modern system for registering and protecting the appearance of products, including their shape, colours, materials, packaging and graphic symbols. Protection would generally apply to new designs with a distinctive overall appearance, giving owners exclusive control over making, selling, importing or using products featuring them for up to 25 years, while allowing limited private, experimental and educational use. It would also provide remedies and criminal penalties for infringement, allow licences and international registrations, and update copyright rules, giving effect to European and international design-protection agreements.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to make provision for the protection of designs and to give effect to Directive 98/71/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 October 1998 on the legal protection of designs, to give effect to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs, adopted at Geneva on 2 July, 1999, and to provide for related matters
