Landlord and Tenant (Ground Rent Abolition) Bill 2000
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Landlord and Tenant (Ground Rent Abolition) Bill 2000 would end ground rents by converting eligible leasehold interests in private homes, local-authority dwellings and other properties into full ownership. Former ground landlords and other affected interest-holders would receive compensation, secured against the newly created freehold, while disputes could be settled through arbitration. Freehold certificates and simpler Land Registry procedures would clarify ownership, and some lease restrictions would end, although protections such as rights of way would remain.
Formal long title
