Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Bill 2001

The proposal would make performing female genital mutilation on anyone an offence, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a fine, or both. Consent—including parental consent for a child—would not be a defence, while medically necessary surgery by a registered doctor would remain permitted.
