Tribunals of Inquiry (Amendment) Bill 2001

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposal would increase the penalties for refusing to co-operate with, or disobeying orders from, a tribunal of inquiry. The maximum fine on conviction would rise from £10,000 to £250,000, while a prison sentence of up to two years would remain possible; for less serious cases dealt with in the District Court, the maximum fine would rise from £500 to £5,000. It aims to strengthen tribunals’ ability to secure co-operation, following criticism that their existing powers were too limited.
