Surgeon General Bill 2001

The Surgeon General Bill 2001 would create an independent Surgeon General appointed by Dáil Éireann to assess Ireland’s health needs, protect the public interest and independently examine health-service proposals. The office-holder would report to the Dáil, at least annually and whenever required, and could conduct investigations and reviews; the role would have a salary equal to the Comptroller and Auditor General, a retirement age of 67 and strong protection from removal.
