Independent Garda Ombudsman Bill 2001
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would replace the Garda complaints system with an independent Garda Ombudsman, able to investigate complaints and Garda conduct without Garda members carrying out the investigations. It would give complainants stronger procedural rights, allow either complainants or Garda members to appeal to the High Court, and abolish the existing Complaints Board and Appeal Board.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to establish an office to be known as Ombudsman Neamhspleách an Gharda or in the English language, the Independent Garda Ombudsman, to repeal the Garda Síochána (Complaints) Act, 1986, and to provide for related matters
