Railway Safety Bill 2001

Public bill · Government · Presented

The Railway Safety Bill 2001 would create an independent Railway Safety Commission to oversee rail safety across public railways, light rail, metro, heritage railways and some industrial lines. Railway operators would have to manage risks, prepare approved safety plans, investigate incidents, and prove that new trains and infrastructure are safe; inspectors could order dangerous activities to stop. It would also introduce alcohol and drug testing for safety-critical staff, consultation on roadworks near railways, and a Railway Safety Advisory Council representing the industry, workers, passengers and people with disabilities.
