Data Protection (Amendment) Bill 2002

The Data Protection (Amendment) Bill 2002 would strengthen Ireland’s data-protection rules and bring them into line with European requirements. It would cover some organised paper records as well as electronic data, require clear legal grounds for using personal information, impose extra safeguards for sensitive information, and give people stronger rights to be informed, access, correct, block or object to the use of their data. It would also regulate transfers of data outside the European Economic Area, restrict solely automated decisions with significant effects, and give the Data Protection Commissioner wider monitoring and enforcement powers.
