Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Bill 2002
Public bill · Government · Presented
The Bill would create an independent Ombudsman for the Defence Forces to investigate complaints by serving and former personnel about unfair or improper administrative actions that the military’s own procedures have not resolved. Complaints would generally need to be made within 12 months, while matters before the courts, military operations, discipline, employment negotiations or involving protected security information would be excluded. The Ombudsman could request relevant information, make recommendations and report publicly to the Oireachtas; unresolved complaints would no longer go to the Minister for Defence.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the appointment and functions of an Ombudsman for the Defence Forces, to amend the Defence Act, 1954, and to provide for related matters
