The Bill would extend the deadline for candidates and others to submit statements of general-election expenses for the 17 May 2002 election, from 56 to 90 days after polling day, with power for the Minister to allow more time. It aimed to allow the Supreme Court appeal in the Kelly case, about certain election-spending exemptions, to be resolved before the statements were filed.

Bill entitled an Act to extend, as respects expenses incurred in relation to the general election for members of Dáil Éireann lately held, the period specified in section 36 of the Electoral Act, 1997 within which statements under that section in respect of such expenses can be furnished
