European Arrest Warrant Bill 2003
Public bill · Government · Presented
The Bill would replace extradition between Ireland and EU member states with a faster system for arresting and surrendering people wanted for prosecution or to serve prison sentences. Irish courts would decide whether someone is surrendered, with rights to legal advice, an interpreter, bail and appeal, and protections against torture, the death penalty, discrimination, unfair trials and being tried twice for the same offence. It would also allow Ireland to issue European arrest warrants for suspects abroad, making it easier for EU countries to pursue serious cross-border crime.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to give effect to Council framework decision of 13 June 2002 on the European arrest warrant and the surrender procedures between Member States; To amend the Extradition Act 1965 and certain other enactments; and to provide for matters connected therewith
