The measure would bring together and clarify the Minister’s existing powers to support transport services to Ireland’s islands. It would allow subsidies for ferry services and, with the agreement of the Finance and Transport Ministers, for connecting bus services linked to certain ferry or air contracts. It would also allow the State to acquire land or existing airstrips, including compulsorily where necessary and with compensation, and to build, improve, maintain and operate island aerodromes and related facilities. It would replace earlier legislation while protecting existing contracts; it creates no immediate spending or staffing commitment, but provides a framework for developing future island transport.
