European Parliament Elections (Amendment) Bill 2003

The measure would update the rules for European Parliament elections to meet EU requirements. It would make some European and Central Bank officials, an EU court member and the European Ombudsman ineligible to stand; end dual membership of the Oireachtas and European Parliament, subject to a temporary exception after the 2004 election; and delay announcing results until voting ends across the EU. From 2004, Ireland would have two fewer seats, Clare would move from Munster to Connacht-Ulster, and three constituencies would be renamed.

Bill entitled an Act to amend the European Parliament Elections Act 1997 to give further effect to Decision 76/787/ECSC, EEC, Euratom, to give effect to Council Decision 2002/772/EC, Euratom of 25 June and 23 September 2002 amending the Act annexed to the first-mentioned Decision, to amend the constituencies for which candidates are elected and the number of members to be elected for such constituencies and to provide for related matters
