Maritime Security Bill 2004
Public bill · Government · Presented
The Maritime Security Bill 2004 would make serious attacks and other unlawful acts against ships, maritime navigation and offshore fixed platforms criminal offences in Ireland, with penalties of up to life imprisonment. It would allow Irish authorities to arrest, search and prosecute suspects, including for certain acts committed abroad, and to extradite or hand them over to other countries; it also provides safeguards on bail, legal representation and protection from being tried twice for the same offence. Its purpose is to implement two 1988 international agreements aimed at combating terrorism and protecting maritime transport.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to give effect to the United Nations Convention for the suppression of unlawful acts against the safety of maritime navigation, done at Rome on 10 March 1988, and to the protocol for the suppression of unlawful acts against the safety of fixed platforms located on the continental shelf, done at Rome on that date.
