Civil Partnership Bill 2004
Public bill · Private Member · Presented
The Bill would create a legal system for registering civil partnerships between cohabiting adults aged 18 or over, whether of the same or different sex, who are not married, already partnered or closely related. It aims to give couples outside marriage greater protection and practical rights, including in inheritance, pensions, registration and residency, while covering both same-sex and opposite-sex relationships. It would also set rules for ending or invalidating partnerships and for recognising equivalent relationships formed abroad.
