The Privacy Bill 2006 would create a new civil claim for deliberate, unlawful invasions of privacy, including surveillance, misuse of someone’s identity for commercial purposes, and revealing personal information. Courts could award damages, stop the conduct, order the return of material or profits, while protecting lawful public duties, crime prevention, CCTV and responsible reporting on matters of public importance.
