Nuclear Test Ban Bill 2006
Public bill · Government · Presented
Ireland would ban all nuclear explosions in the State and make it an offence for Irish citizens to carry them out abroad, including attempts to organise or encourage such explosions. The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland would act as the national authority, with powers to investigate suspected breaches, obtain information, take samples and support international inspections under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. Serious offences could carry a fine, life imprisonment or both, while obstructing inspections, withholding information or providing false information could also lead to penalties. This would give effect in Irish law to an international system intended to prevent nuclear weapons testing and help detect possible tests worldwide.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to give effect to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 10 September 1996; and to provide for related matters
