Ethics in Public Office Bill 2006

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The measure would allow the Standards in Public Office Commission to appoint an inquiry officer to carry out a preliminary investigation even when nobody has made a formal complaint. The officer could gather evidence, interview relevant people, request documents and report to the Commission, helping it decide whether a full investigation is justified. The change responds to the Commission’s view that this power should be available in exceptional cases involving significant public-interest concerns, while avoiding the need to begin formal proceedings immediately.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to enable the appointment by the Standards in Public Office Commission of an inquiry officer to carry out a preliminary Inquiry in cases where it is acting of its own initative and has not received a complaint, for that purpose to amend the Standards in Public Office Act 2001, and provide for related matters
