The Criminal Justice Bill 2007 would tighten bail rules, allowing electronic monitoring, more information from applicants, and prosecution appeals, while introducing tougher sentences for repeat organised-crime, drug-trafficking and firearms offences. It would also give Gardaí wider powers to draw inferences, collect and retain fingerprints and photographs, and detain suspects for longer in serious cases, alongside stronger Garda management and investigation oversight. The measures aim to prevent reoffending and improve crime investigations, but would also expand state powers and restrict the circumstances in which suspects can remain silent or obtain bail.
