Rehabilitation of Offenders Bill 2007
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Rehabilitation of Offenders Bill 2007 would allow certain convictions to become “spent” after a rehabilitation period, provided the person completed the sentence and committed no further offence during that time. The periods proposed are five, seven or ten years, depending on the sentence, but the scheme would exclude prison terms over 30 months, sexual offences and offences against children. Once spent, convictions generally would not need to be disclosed and could not normally be used to disadvantage someone in employment, except in jobs involving children, policing, the Defence Forces and other specified roles.
