The Education (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2007 would change how appeals are handled when a student is suspended, expelled or refused enrolment, including in an Irish-language class. Appeals committees would consider the student’s and others’ education, safety and welfare, the seriousness of the behaviour, the school’s response and its behaviour policies; they could reject pointless or abusive appeals and seek information within set deadlines. It would also update the Inspectorate’s responsibilities, restrict access to information used to compile school league tables, allow education and special-ne needs bodies to make submissions, and enable Crawford Art Gallery property in Cork to be transferred to the Office of Public Works.
