Legal Practitioners (Irish Language) Bill 2007

Public bill · Government · Presented

The Legal Practitioners (Irish Language) Bill 2007 would promote the use of Irish in legal services by requiring King’s Inns and the Law Society to provide training in Irish legal terms and texts for barrister and solicitor students. It would also create optional advanced courses and at least annual exams for lawyers who want to practise law through Irish. Lawyers who pass could be listed on public Irish-language registers, helping people find barristers or solicitors able to handle cases in Irish. The measure would repeal older Irish-language qualification rules and update related solicitor legislation, replacing them with a more structured system for developing legal services through Irish.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to promote the better use of the Irish language by legal practitioners and the provision of legal services through Irish and for that purpose to provide for courses of study and the establishment of registers by the Honorable Society of King's Inns and the Law Society of Ireland, to repeal the Legal Practitioners (Qualification) Act 1929, to amend the Solicitors Act 1954 and to provide for related matters
