Ethics in Public Office Bill 2008

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposal would let the Standards in Public Office Commission start a preliminary inquiry into suspected wrongdoing even when nobody has made a formal complaint. It could appoint an inquiry officer to gather written or recorded statements, interview relevant people, and give anyone whose reputation might be harmed a chance to respond to the evidence. This would give the Commission a way to examine concerns proactively before deciding whether a full investigation is needed.
