Local Elections Bill 2008
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would replace the 1999 rules on donations and spending in local elections with a stronger system based on the 1997 Electoral Act. It would require the Minister to make rules covering disclosure of donations, including anonymous donations, spending limits, election expenses, financial statements, and oversight by the Standards in Public Office Commission. Spending controls would apply from 51 months after the previous local-election polling day until polling day for the next election, with limits broadly linked to those for Dáil elections and adjusted for inflation. It would also restore the right to challenge a local election where these rules were not followed.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to repeal the Local Elections (Disclosure of Donations and Expenditure) Act 1999, to amend the Electoral Act 1997 and to provide for related matters.
