Legal Services Ombudsman Bill 2008
Public bill · Government · Presented
Would establish an independent Legal Services Ombudsman to oversee how the Bar Council and Law Society handle complaints about barristers and solicitors. People who believe their complaint was delayed, inadequately investigated or mishandled could ask the Ombudsman to review it; the Ombudsman could require investigations to be started, completed or repeated, recommend action, and enforce directions through the High Court. The office would also review complaint procedures, report on whether enough lawyers are being admitted to meet public needs at reasonable cost, and be funded mainly through levies on the two professional bodies.
