The proposal would change the Consumer Protection Act 2007 so that the District Court could hear a consumer-protection offence as a less serious, summary case whenever the law allows, rather than only where the person had first been formally charged on indictment. This would clarify and potentially speed up the handling of these offences in the District Court.
