Credit Institutions (Financial Support) Bill 2008

The measure would let the Minister for Finance provide financial support, including loans or buying shares, to specified banks and their subsidiaries to protect Ireland’s financial system during the crisis. It would also allow the Minister to approve bank mergers or acquisitions needed for financial stability, even where competition concerns would normally be decided by the Competition Authority.
