Criminal Justice (Violent Crime Prevention) Bill 2008

The proposal would require adults convicted of murder to serve at least 25 years before remission or ordinary temporary release, while replacing automatic prison remission with a possible reduction of up to one quarter for good conduct and rehabilitation. It would also increase maximum penalties for assault causing harm and illegal knife or firearm possession, require stolen firearms and ammunition to be reported, and allow courts to restrict suspected members of criminal organisations through measures such as residence limits, association bans and electronic tagging.

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Criminal Justice Acts, to abolish automatic remission of sentences in criminal cases, to provide a minumum 25 year term to be served on conviction of murder, to provide civil restrictions on persons involved in organised criminal activity and to provide for connected matters.
