Human Rights Commission (Amendment) Bill 2008
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Human Rights Commission (Amendment) Bill 2008 would strengthen the Commission’s role by allowing it to help people take human-rights cases to recognised international bodies and requiring Ministers to seek its views on proposals with major human-rights implications. It would also require three-year strategic plans, parliamentary oversight of spending, regular reports and reviews of its effectiveness. Responsibility for several administrative and funding matters would move from individual Ministers to the Taoiseach and a joint Oireachtas human-rights committee, increasing accountability to Parliament.
