National Archives (Amendment) Bill 2009

The National Archives (Amendment) Bill 2009 would reduce the waiting period for transferring government department records to the National Archives, and making them available to the public, from 30 years to 15 years. It would take effect five years after being passed, giving departments time to prepare for the new system. The change is intended to improve public access and transparency in an era of 24-hour news, televised Parliament and widespread digital communication.
