Small Claims (Protection of Small Businesses) Bill 2009

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The Small Claims (Protection of Small Businesses) Bill 2009 would allow businesses to use the small-claims process to recover unpaid debts of up to €3,000 from customers, including individuals and other businesses. The process is intended to be quicker and cheaper than ordinary court proceedings, with an effort first made to settle the dispute and a court hearing if necessary. It would raise the existing limit from €1,269.74 and help small firms deal with late payments and unpaid cheques, which can threaten cash flow, jobs and business survival.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to provide for the amendment of the District Court Rules; to provide that vendors may use the small claims procedure for the recovery of small debts and to provide for connected matters
