Local Government (Rates) (Amendment) Bill 2009

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Local authorities can waive some or all commercial rates for businesses under a scheme approved by elected councillors. The proposal would limit the Environment Minister’s ability to block such a scheme, allowing refusal only where it does not comply with relevant rules. It would also repeal the 1970 regulations that currently give the Minister a broad power to withhold consent, making it easier for councils to support struggling businesses and encourage new start-ups.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Local Government (Rates) Act 1970 by delimiting the circumstances in which the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government can refuse consent to a rates waiver scheme; and to provide for connected matters
