The measure would create a legal registration system for same-sex couples, giving registered partners protections involving their home, finances, inheritance, pensions, domestic violence and separation. It would also protect financially dependent unmarried couples—same-sex or opposite-sex—by allowing court-ordered maintenance, property or pension support after a relationship ends, while recognising agreements that set out their financial arrangements or exclude these protections.
