Twenty-Ninth Amendment of the Constitution (Judges' Remuneration) Bill 2011

The proposal would amend the Constitution to allow judges’ pay to be reduced in limited circumstances, changing the existing protection against reductions while they remain in office. Judges’ pay would still be subject to taxes, levies and other charges that apply to people generally or to a particular group. A pay cut could also be applied where the law reduces the publicly funded pay of other groups and states that the reduction is in the public interest. The change matters because it would allow judges to share in broad public-sector pay reductions, including during periods of financial pressure, while retaining safeguards against arbitrary cuts.
